Christmas shopping in October: the 14-day return window expires before the big day

Getting three months ahead of Christmas Eve changes everything, both for your wallet and for your options if a gift turns out to be the wrong choice. Here’s what the law says about returns, and the checks to make before reaching for your card.

The essentials
  • The 14-day right of withdrawal for an online purchase starts from the moment the parcel is received, not on 25 December.
  • For Christmas 2025, the French planned to spend 491 euros on average, including 297 euros on around nine gifts, according to the Cofidis/CSA Research barometer.
  • In physical shops, Article L. 221-18 of the Consumer Code provides no legal right of withdrawal, with exchanges depending solely on the retailer.

Doing your Christmas shopping in October spreads the expense over three months, but the 14-day right of withdrawal attached to online orders starts ticking the moment the parcel arrives, so it has already expired well before Christmas Eve. In physical shops, there is no legal deadline at all: any exchange depends entirely on the retailer's goodwill.

Why so many families wrap up their gift shopping as early as October

End-of-year aisles go up very early in supermarkets, toy shops and garden centres, according to Planet.fr. For families, the motivation is financial. For Christmas 2025, the French planned to spend 491 euros on average for the festive season, including 297 euros on gifts, down from 323 euros the previous year, according to the 9th edition of the Cofidis/CSA Research barometer. The median budget stood at 350 euros, with 123 euros for the meal and 28 euros for decorations, for around nine gifts bought. Spreading that sum across October, November and December weighs far less heavily than one big spend in mid-December.

The 14-day withdrawal period starts from delivery

Article L. 221-18 of the French Consumer Code grants fourteen days to withdraw from a distance contract, with no justification needed. The clock starts the day you receive the item, not on 25 December. A games console ordered on 8 October can no longer be returned by late December, even if the child ends up with two of them. For in-store purchases, the rule surprises even more people: there is no right of withdrawal at all, and any return depends purely on the retailer's policy.

Good habits to adopt before you pay

Read the terms and conditions before checking out: some retailers voluntarily extend their return policy into January, Planet.fr notes, but this leniency varies from one shop to another and should always be checked in writing. Always ask for a price-free gift receipt, the only document that will make a post-Christmas exchange easier. Quietly unbox electronics and battery-powered toys as soon as they arrive: a fault spotted in October is far easier to sort out than one discovered on the morning of 25 December.

On the budget side, set your maximum spend in October and track every purchase. November's promotional weeks quickly catch out those who bought early without keeping tabs, and the final bill climbs instead of shrinking. If funds are tight, a selection of Christmas gifts under 20 euros can help keep smaller presents in check.

The real risk of buying early: duplicate gifts

Three months separate your order from the unwrapping, plenty of time to forget who is giving what. Since the withdrawal period will have expired, a duplicate gift is one you simply have to live with. Share a family Christmas list as early as autumn, ticking off gifts already reserved, and follow the anti-duplicate method for siblings and grandparents who each shop separately.

Take ten minutes this weekend: create your free Christmas list, send the link to your loved ones, then place your orders. In that order, shopping early in October stays a genuine saving.
