Six Christmas markets located less than three hours from Paris have published their 2026 dates: Lille opens on 18 November, Amiens and Metz on the 20th, Colmar on the 23rd, Reims on the 25th and Strasbourg on the 27th. Closing dates range from 24 to 30 December. Plenty to plan a gift-shopping weekend without crossing the whole of France.
The six Christmas markets less than 3 hours from Paris and their 2026 dates
Organisers have confirmed the schedules, city by city. Here's the full calendar, ranked from earliest to latest opening.
| City | 2026 Dates | On site |
|---|---|---|
| Lille | 18 Nov - 30 Dec | Christmas village on Place Rihour, nearly 90 chalets |
| Amiens | 20 Nov - 30 Dec | Around a hundred red chalets, 2 km of illuminated walkways |
| Metz | 20 Nov - 30 Dec | 130 chalets across five squares in the city centre |
| Colmar | 23 Nov - 29 Dec | Children's choirs on boats in Little Venice, from 25 Nov to 19 Dec |
| Reims | 25 Nov - 27 Dec | Around 150 chalets along the elevated Promenades Jean-Louis Schneiter |
| Strasbourg | 27 Nov - 24 Dec | Eight markets and more than 300 chalets |
Two dates change everything in this table. Strasbourg closes as early as 24 December, meaning there's no catching up on a forgotten gift between Christmas and New Year, as detailed in our piece on the Strasbourg Christmas market dates. On the other hand, Metz, Amiens and Lille run until 30 December, and the Metz Christmas market adds its Lantern Trail at Square Boufflers from 21 November. For the choice between Strasbourg and Colmar, we compared the seven weeks of chalets in Alsace.
Book while the dates are fresh, travel midweek
Train tickets sell in pricing tiers: the cheapest fares go first, and whatever's left for a Saturday in December ends up at the top rate. Grab refundable fares while your December schedule is still in flux, and avoid Saturdays in the last two weeks before Christmas, the busiest for crowded lanes. A Thursday or Friday late afternoon, just as the lights come on, makes for a far more manageable market, even with a pushchair.
One window often goes unnoticed: the big wheel set up on Grand-Place in Lille keeps turning until 16 January 2027, according to the city of Lille, even though the chalets on Place Rihour pack up on 30 December. A January getaway is therefore still possible for the festive lights, minus the December crowds.
Bring back gifts, not just mulled wine
Between 90 and 300 chalets depending on the city: without a prepared list, you come home with two snow globes and no gift for your brother-in-law. Before you leave, jot down three or four specific recipients and the type of item you're after: ceramics, textiles, wooden toys, treats. On the edible side, Reims' pink biscuits, Amiens macarons and Alsatian bredele travel well and fit neatly into a gift box. At artisan chalets, runs are often short, so if a piece catches your eye, grab it then rather than on a second pass.
The real risk with a trip as a couple or family is duplication, two aunts bringing home the same painted mug from Colmar. Centralising everyone's wishes in a shared family Christmas list settles the question in advance, so you'll know exactly what to look for in the stalls instead of buying at random. One last tip to help decide: Lille, Amiens and Metz remain the only options after Christmas, right up to 30 December. If your only free weekend falls between the two celebrations, that's where the choice lies.
