Strasbourg Christmas Market 2026: opening falls on a Friday, and that changes your gift shopping

An opening date known well in advance, a closing date still unclear, and illuminations announced ahead of everything else: here's how to read this Alsatian calendar if you're planning to tick off some of your gifts there.

The essentials
  • The Strasbourg Christmas Market will open on 27 November 2026, a Friday, according to the official Strasbourg Capitale de Noël website.
  • The 2026 closing date remains unconfirmed by the City, despite dates from 24 to 30 December circulating on online event calendars.
  • In 2025, the chalets were open from 11.30am to 9pm, with an earlier closing at 6pm on 24 December.

The Strasbourg Christmas Market will open on 27 November 2026, a date announced on the official Strasbourg Capitale de Noël website. The Christkindelsmärik, held every year since 1570 in the old town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will therefore start on a Friday, whereas the 2025 edition began on a Wednesday, 26 November.

Strasbourg Christmas Market 2026: the opening is confirmed, the rest less so

A Friday opening is no small detail for anyone travelling from afar: the first weekend of chalets falls right after, along with the crowds that come with it. The rest of the calendar remains partly up in the air. The City hasn't published an official closing date, and the dates circulating on online event calendars, from 24 to 30 December, aren't backed by any official statement from the municipality so far.

Illuminations before the chalets: a precedent, not a certainty

According to actu.fr, Strasbourg's street illuminations will be switched on from 20 November, a week before the first chalets open, with the first lighting of the Grand Sapin on Place Kléber accompanying the 27 November opening. This gap did happen in 2025: the Vitrines de Strasbourg association and local shopkeepers lit up the city centre from 21 November 2025 until 6 January 2026. There's still no guarantee the same pattern will repeat exactly this year. The 2026 opening hours haven't been published yet either; in 2025, the chalets were open from 11.30am to 9pm, with an earlier closing at 6pm on 24 December. Worth checking on the official Strasbourg Capitale de Noël page before booking a train.

Planning your gift shopping around this calendar

If Strasbourg is part of your Christmas plans, two habits can save you from disappointing results once you're back from the trip. The first: set off with your gift list for loved ones already written, rather than deciding everything on the spot in front of a bredele stall. The second: note down what you buy there, because a gift spotted in Alsace and another ordered online the following week often end up as duplicates.

A Christmas list shared with the family solves the problem upfront, especially when several branches of the family are shopping in parallel. You can create yours in a few minutes before packing your bag, then apply the anti-duplicate method to split gift ideas between parents, godparents and grandparents.

No trip to Alsace planned? Other Christmas markets open in November closer to home, like the La Défense Christmas market. The principle stays the same: an up-to-date list in your pocket, and the chalets finally serve a clear purpose.
